Fresh Music Aberdeen works to ensure that all guitar students get the full immersive experience when it comes to music. This includes not only learning the instrument but also recording what they learn/write and finally playing together with other likeminded people.
It is true that you learn best when you play guitar with others. I offer all of my guitar students within their lesson times the opportunity to meet together with other students to jam and work on songs together. Under the music school (Fresh Music Aberdeen) banner I arrange evenings where students (with me there to guide and offer advice) can meet, discuss tracks and play together. I write parts for each specific student to match their level. It gives each guitar student the opportunity to learn what it’s like to work with others.
As part of their guitar lessons each week we work on the song they’re working on with the other students and we go over any parts that they are unsure of to ensure they feel the most confident when the next jam comes along.

When you work with other musicians you gain the opportunity to learn from them and feel the music in a more organic manner. I know it sounds a bit airy fairy but if you’re in a room making music with others and you all play your parts in unison it creates, a sort of tingly feeling of satisfaction. There are no words really to describe the euphoria that comes from playing a song well with others and working as a team to do it.
Patience and a humble attitude are the key elements required when playing together. Ego is poison in the water as far as I’m concerned. In fact, I am very cautious in who I invite to these events because as soon as any sort of ego (I’m better than others) attitude enters the room it’s a downward slop from there. Music is about appreciation – appreciating other musicians and giving them space to shine, with that attitude they’re more likely to do the same for you.
Learning to play guitar in Aberdeen is about the whole experience. Fresh Music Aberdeen has been rated best in Scotland for guitar lessons two years running and that is not down to anything particularly special on my part. It’s down to the students’ commitment and by simply offering an immersive experience. It’s amazing what you can achieve with the right approach.
Being a guitar teacher in Aberdeen is a privilege and it’s great to work with such dedicated and talented musicians!
